Girl Finding Her Way

Babblings, rants and the general nonsense of a 20-something newly admitted attorney trying to find her way

Work, Dreams, Hockey Player, Apprehension, And Unofficial May 12, 2008

1. I have been MIA… sorry. The thing is, I probably just worked a 70 hour week… AT A RESTAURANT. Most of those hours came between Wednesday and yesterday, though. So, I have not had a chance to write. I will try and be better at that in the future.

2. Sometimes I have strange dreams. Ofttimes I can remember them. Last night I had a weird lesbian dream. I have no idea where that came from. THEN I had a dream about Hockey Player.

3. Now that I think of it, I have not written about Hockey Player. Let’s just say that he and I had a “thing” for a while in college and during Athletic Trainer and I’s first year. HP is a year or 2 younger than me and gorgeous. He’s a pretty nice kid too. Anyway, there was a massive blowout when he found out about AT and I. This was due in part to the fact that AT had worked on HP many times. HP KNOWS AT. He was ridiculously upset and caused a riff between AT and I for some time too. So… HP has been in my head lately. He got engaged in January (maybe December?) to the girl he had been dating on and off in college (he and I = during off times). I hardly ever think about him but I have been a LOT in the last couple of weeks. During the dream, he and his now fiancee were at my restaurant, and I had to walk past them like a million times. I was trying to ignore them (they were not my table) and not make eye contact. HP’s fiancee at one point called me over and basically just made a fool of me. I could not make a scene so I just walked away. I felt embarrassed, humiliated and jealous as all get out. I did not enjoy this dream. HP looked sexy as ever though… semi-pro hockey must be doing that boy some good.

3. Speaking of HP and his fiancee, having moved to Boston, I am now concerned that I will run into them or any one of the other people from college with whom I do not have a good relationship. There are quite a few people who I don’t like and vice versa from that era in my life. Most live around Boston. I can only imagine a night out drunk and bumping into someone at a bar. Ugh. Why this matters? Not sure. I get that same feeling when Unofficial and I go out and we’re in an area AT might be. I cannot even begin to fathom the awkwardness of that. I hope it never happens. I am not sure how I would react either. In fact, the thought of this chance encounter makes me ill.

4. After this past week of work, I’m burned out even more than I have been in the past. I took tomorrow night off for Irish Teacher’s birthday dinner. I have told Unofficial that I have tomorrow off. We only spoke for a few minutes over the last couple of days due to my crazy schedule. When we speak later I expect that he may try and make plans for either tonight or tomorrow. My response to a tomorrow night plan shall be “Oh.. I have a umm dinner… ” and if he asks with who “A… friend…” There will be not other details given to him. I know, shady… but that’s what he gets. Haha. He’s still seeing someone else (not as regularly or frequently as me and they definitely have not had “the talk” so it seems to be more casual than he and I) so let’s see how he feels about the possibility of me dating others.

5. Funny, though, because I took Friday night off as well. Friday’s have not been good at the restaurant so I felt pretty OK giving that shift to someone else. Unofficial is aware of my night off and I am pretty sure we’re going to make it a date night. We haven’t had a regular weekend night to go out in a long time. I think it will be fun!

Roomie And The Cat, Job Search, Edamame, and Hopeful Weather May 4, 2008

1. Roomie is in and so is her little cat. It’s been kind of funny how the cats have been. Simon is just all chill and the other cat keeps hissing and growling. She hasn’t swatted at him or anything and they’ve gotten about a foot from each other. They’re going to be best friends, I can tell. As for Roomie, she’s pretty chill as well. She had her little 21 year old toy come over last night when she got back from the bars. At first I was slightly annoyed. Then I realized it’s her first night and that she deserves to have whomever spend it with her much like I did with Unofficial. I’m not sure what happened as I put in my ear plugs and went right to sleep.

2. Tomorrow I plan on being very proactive. I will wake up early, get myself all together and then do some research online. Said research will be centered around my new job search. I’ve sent Care Bear an email to get her resume so that I can have proper “Attorney” formatting. Haha. Over the weekend I made numerous connections at the restaurant. One is a PARTNER at a large international firm in Beantown. She is in the litigation department. She said she wasn’t sure if they had openings, but she would forward on my resume!! NICE!! The other connections were women (all out to dinner together) who have all worked for firms for years. I believe they are legal assistants or paralegals. They also want me to send them my resume. And, yet another connection… a woman who works for the Harvard Law career services department. She said she could send me postings!!! :-D I am psyched. And will be sending out lots of emails tomorrow.

3. Last weekend Unofficial brought over frozen edamame from Trader Joe’s. I loved it. It is almost midnight currently, and I’m cooking some up now. They are fantastic.

4. I hope it’s nice out tomorrow. Part of my productive day I would like to have is to go running for the first time since I moved. I’d love to run by the water today. It would be great. Please be nice out!!

Other People’s Results, New Place New Roomie, Lots Of Unofficial, Loans and My Little Monster May 3, 2008

1. Congrats to all of my colleagues who have received their letters and passed the MA bar!! My sympathies to those who did not and, as I’ve stated, please let me know if there’s anything I can do. As for myself… I’m still not typing what I know until the letter arrives. For some reason I feel like it will reverse the results mid-mailing if I do so prior to getting hard proof. I am very excited, nonetheless.

2. I have been doing a good job of unpacking and getting everything pretty settled at the new place this week. Roomie and her kitty cat move in today, any moment really. I just swiffered the floors and I’m waiting for them to get here. I have to leave mid-afternoon to head to the restaurant, so I hope they get here soon. I’d like to be here for at least a little bit when she first gets here.

3. Unofficial has been so cute lately. He spent my first night in the new place with me, which was great. Then, on Thursday night he came over again. The story is funny though. He had a dinner with his little brother from BigBro/BigSis. It was some awards dinner from the BB/BS organization. I was at work. Surprisingly, it got busy for me there so I didn’t leave until about 10 pm. Unofficial and I had tentatively planned on him coming over, nothing firm though. So, I called him when I left work:

Me: Where are ya?

Unofficial: I’m at [Irish Bar]

Me: Where’s that?

Unofficial: Across from where you live.

How flippin’ cute! He was waiting for me. I raced home, threw on some jeans and met him at the bar. There was some sort of Irish jam session going on. It was fun. He stayed the night and it was nice. I like when he stays with me at the new place. I just like him. Period.

4. I almost threw up in my mouth yesterday when I realized that my loans come due soon. Sallie Mae was telling me that my private loans were going to be due at $908/month starting in June and my federal at $485/month. WHAAAAAT!? I’m currently waitressing. This does not look good. Haha. I called and my private will be at 780-something and my fed may go down to $60. This is only temporarily, of course, but seriously… anything helps. I better find an attorney position ASAP.

5. Tonight I have to work. It’s Saturday. Somehow this always surprises Unofficial. Why, I’m not sure. I met him while I was at work on a Saturday night. My schedule hasn’t changed in the 4+ months we’ve been dating. He’s an odd one sometimes. Anywho… He’s going out with a bunch of people tonight and told me to text or call when I get out of work. He loves me. OK, maybe not yet, but he’s sooo heading down that path. Hahaha. I have 2 different outfits all ready for me to change into when I get home from work (if it’s not too late) so that I can meet him and his friends out. Also, we have a date on Monday. :-D Yay!!!!

6. Simon is being obnoxious lately. Absolutely 100% obnoxious when I’m sleeping. Much like my friend Random claims that Little Filthy is a Monster, I’ve taken to calling Simon a “little monster” when he wakes me up. How do I get him to STOP messing with the blinds when I’m sleeping??? HELP! It’s the WORST sound ever!

Marathon Monday Eve… April 20, 2008

1. Today we signed the lease! Wahoo! I feel a lot more comfortable having it all settled. AND the landlord was there with her “handy-man” (who, I believe, is very “handy” for her in other ways as well, from the sense of things…). We went through the entire apartment and spoke about the things that need to be done in the next week. They both say it will all get done in time! Yay!! I brought over more stuff as well. SLOWLY the Plymouth apartment is starting to empty out. I’m feeling pretty good about this move…

2. Marathon Monday is tomorrow!!! This is a great day in the city of Boston and I get to be there for the first time ever!! The plan is to meet up with Fake Big Sis on our street and then to go to a place called Vox Populi. Apparently it is on Boylston Street where the finish line is! So cool!! Well, it better be… I mean, it was $40/ticket for the cover charge… We are planning on being there at 10:30 a.m. I have no idea what it’s going to be like but I’m super excited!! :-D

3. Unofficial and I have tentative plans for tomorrow night. He better come through. I’m missing his cute face and snuggly-ness. ;-)

Frisky Friday… April 18, 2008

1. My shoes and suits, along with some kitchen stuff and books, are now over at the new apartment. Sadly, there is a ridiculous amount of stuff left to bring over. Luckily, I’m loving the apartment more and more…

2. Unofficial and I had an impromptu sleepover last night… :-D

3. Speaking of Unofficial, his parents popped into the restaurant tonight for drinks before going to a family part. I. LOVE. THEM. And… they love me too! It’s fantastic. I need no other cheerleaders in regards to that boy, the two of them will be enough! They make me smile…

4. There may be some news regarding bar passage a lot sooner than previously expected… I’m predicting some sort of information in the very near future. :-)

5. Work Crush and his girlfriend are done. Apparently there was a huge blow-out over the weekend. Tonight, he was very curious about what was going on with Unofficial and I, mostly because I was giving Unofficial’s Dad a tour of the restaurant’s private dining areas and introduced him to WC… haha. I told him that I am happy with things. And I am. WC is good for work, but probably not so much for real life.

6. I went running again today. Unofficial and I were up so early that I had time to run, tan (shush), pack some boxes, put them in my gas guzzler, drive to the new apartment, unload the car AND unpack most of the boxes… all before work! The run was short but good. I also feel pretty “jacked” from all the box lifting. I can’t wait to wear a dress for Unofficial with some hot heels again! ;-)

A Few Thoughts… April 16, 2008

1. For well over 10 years I stayed away from eating all burgers at Burger King. I just don’t like them. I would occasionally get a chicken sandwich, but that’s it. HOWEVER, in the last month or so, I have been craving (and eating) Whopper Jrs. This is definitely odd…

2. Work Crush made a surprise visit at a casual wine training tonight at the restaurant. The wine training was really just a wine tasting with some info on the wines and you could show up any time between 7 and 10 pm to learn about the wines. WC came in right as we were getting through the last of the wines for the first time. I debated sticking around… but realized it would be silly. I left and texted him that if he wanted to meet up for a drink when he was done, I’d be around the area for a bit. I also said that I was sure that we are both adult enough for it not to be trouble. His response came an hour and a half later. WC was just leaving the restaurant, has to wake up at 5 am and that maybe next time we could do something… How come my flirty I-just-want-to-make-out-with-him situations have to be annoying too? grr

3. While waiting for WC’s reply, I decided it would be a good idea to drop some stuff off at the new apartment. I discovered the best thing… it takes only 15 minutes from work to the new apartment at night!! :-) niiiice…

4. I love Amarone…

Box-Land, Dating fun, Apartment Crush and A Big Mess April 16, 2008

1. I have boxes all over the place and it’s like Simon is at a playground. He loves it. My current landlord took away her big sectional sofa today because they’re bringing it to the Vineyard for the summer. Apparently, under and behind the couch is where Simon’s hiding place is. This is what I found: 27 hair bands (seriously), 5 pens, 3 half chewed ear plugs, 2 lip glosses, 41 cents, and midnight in moscow nail polish.

2. Unofficial and I had a date last night. It was fantastic… we are so back to normal!! I love it!! I’ve been all giggly and smiley today.

3. Before we went to dinner, I brought Unofficial by my new apartment. He definitely approved. And, I’m liking the apartment more every time I step foot in it. As we drove to dinner, Unofficial asked “So, what’s the first thing you’re going to do when you move?” I just looked at him with a raised eyebrow and smirk. Did I mention that he’s the one helping me to move? ;-)

4. The condo is a disaster. It’s slightly disheartening that people were in here today to get that couch. There’s a thong on the floor right in the line of sight when you walk in, Simon’s litter needs to be changed, boxes abound, clothes everywhere… it’s quite gross. Moving is messy.

I Hate Thinking Of Titles For These… April 11, 2008

1. It was in the 70’s today! I was thrilled. Of course, I decided that meant I should go running for the first time in a while. This was not the best idea due to the high temperatures and my body revolting. I only went for like 20 minutes… my lungs were burning, the legs just would not move fast enough for me. I am making it official, it is time for me to run like daily. Absolutely. Plus, in like a week, my legs will be even more tempting for the men in my life ;-)

2. Work was more bearable tonight. I didn’t want to kill people for more than 3 seconds, so that’s a good thing. Sadly, Work Crush only works Saturday not both weekend nights. On the plus side, my section will be right near his bar area that he’s assigned to for the night. This makes me smile… :-)

3. I woke yesterday morning and my freezer door was opened. How does this happen in the middle of the night? Anyway, I touched one of the chicken breasts that were frozen prior to this… it was not so frozen. I closed the freezer door and made a note in my head not to eat anything out of that freezer now. I’m just too lazy (eh… busy) to throw everything out just yet. One bonus, it means I don’t have to go through everything and determine what is salvageable for the new apartment… everything is now trash! haha.

4. I enjoy walking around naked. The first 30 minutes that I’m awake rarely include clothing. I make coffee naked, check email naked, etc. This is something I will miss when I have a roommate in a couple weeks.

5. Hockey players used to pique my interest, in college. Now, I just find them to be drunks who can’t get the balls to actually have a conversation with a girl they find attractive. A bunch came in after a game tonight (this is a non-pro type thing… although one of them is a cute retired pro hockey player… mmm). It was late and I was trying to help clean up. I walked by this little group of them a few times as I was bringing bottles and glasses back to the bar. They made noises at me. Like hooting, but not really and just strange noises. I ignored them. This no longer amuses me… it makes me miss Unofficial even more than I already do. I seem to have grown up!

6. Spring is a good time to start drinking margaritas. Just an FYI.

While I am aware of the fact that I probably should not be talking about Athletic Trainer right now, I’m going to anyway.

We were texting because of the Memphis/Kansas basketball game tonight. The two of us have a connection to John Calipari, coach of Memphis and we were rooting for his team to win tonight.

Well, as we all know now, Memphis lost. I went and drank more with a few friends and then I called him when I was on my way home. AT proceeded to tell me that he was in a bar and about to hook up with a 21 year old!!! 21!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE’S 41!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME!?!?!?!

Yes, I know that I should not even care…. but of course I do!! I did not spend 4 years with him in it for no reason. 21!?!? Seriously!?!?! She was born when he was 20. GROSS.

Why am I so annoyed? Seriously?! And it’s funny because he asked the same thing. He mentioned Unofficial, and I had to re-iterate that we are dating other people etc. Somehow, though, I am really jealous. I hate this. I am more jealous of AT than I am of the fact that I am pretty sure Unofficial had a date tonight.

I do not think that’s a good thing…

Housing crisis averted. Saturday, I went with that girl to take a look at this apartment right down the street from my friend. It is gorgeous!! It’s the first level of a multi-family. The owner lives on the 2nd floor. All hardwood flooring, tons of windows, fully redone. The windows are all brand new energy efficient windows that pop in to clean. Technically, it’s a two bedroom with one average sized bedroom and a smaller one. However, she’s converted the dining room into another larger bedroom.

Roommate (who will gain a new name as I get to know her more) will take the dining room as her bedroom. It’s pretty cool because it has a built-in hutch with drawers. She likes this because it can be used as a bureau. I’m a little jealous that she has claimed this room.

However, it is good because I will have the larger of the real bedrooms. In that, there are 2 very decent sized closets. Yay! Also, the smaller bedroom will be my office/guest room. It’s a strange sized room. I am *hoping* that my full-size bed fits. There is another very good sized closet in there with a built in bureau.

The bathroom is completely redone, as is the kitchen. The kitchen has brand new never used appliances including a dishwasher. The one weird thing about the kitchen is that there are no top cabinets, just bottom ones. So, we’re having Landlord put up a heavy duty shelf that we can put all of our plates etc on. There is a pantry off of the kitchen where we can put all of our food stuff. Also, Landlord is going to run water into the pantry and we’re going to buy a cheap used W/D set. There is a long hallway that leads from the from of the apartment to the back (the kitchen). Off of the hall are another 2 HUGE closets. The living room is the first room in the apartment you can see and it’s a good size as well.

The neighborhood is safe and, as mentioned, I will be right down the street from my good friend. Parking is on street but it is not a busy street and there is always available parking. We are a block or two from a T station which is good in case I don’t feel like driving into town. You can get a cab real quick as well.

There are a few “best parts” to this:

1. I have a home!!!

2. I will be paying HALF of what I pay right now!!

3. I WILL BE IN BOSTON!!!!

I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am that this is all resolved! Tomorrow night I’m going to give Landlord our checks for 1 month’s rent. Our official lease date is May 1 but Landlord has stated that it would be ok if we are in a few days earlier. Also, she’s giving me keys tomorrow to allow us to move things in slowly if we want. Yay!!
